& induce a really capable officer to take up the onerous duties of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Superintendent of Fire Brigade and Assistant Superintendent of the Gaol temporarily, and I consider that for the above considerations the salary of the Deputy Superintendent of Police should be increased by $600 per annum.

I am further of opinion that in view of the extra work that must necessarily be cast on the Chief Warder when the charge of the Gaol is undertaken by an officer who will not be in a position to devote his entire time to it, the Chief Warder should receive an increase to his salary of $100 a month.

Chief Warder Craig is a hard working officer. He never leaves the Gaol, and I consider that with this addition to his salary he will not be more than sufficiently paid.

If the above recommendations are adopted the total saving on the Gaol establishment will be $4,120 (salary of Superintendent $4000 and allowance for quarters $1080 = $5080 less $960 = $4120).

For the present I propose that I should continue to have the immediate charge of the Gaol, until such time as the recommendation I have made for filling the post of Acting Deputy Superintendent of Police is carried into effect.

The Honourable,

The Colonial Secretary

I have &c.

22 F. H. May,

Capt. Supt. of Police.
